Growing Strong: The Crucial Role of Dirt in Boosting Children’s Health

Encouraging kids to play in the dirt may seem messy, but there are scientific reasons to get our kids to play outside like we did back in the day! While it may result in more laundry, the long-term benefits outweigh the temporary inconvenience. For one thing, healthy soil is home to various healthy bacteria and tiny organisms that actually have positive effects on our health.

Scientists have recently discovered the significance of a specific bacterium called Mycobacterium vaccae. This bacterium is present in nature and is breathed in while spending time outdoors, especially when children are playing in the dirt. Keep reading to learn why this little germ is one that you’ll want your kids to become acquainted with. And you too! Healthy dirt exposure is good for nearly everyone, (although individuals with compromised immune systems or specific health conditions should consult with healthcare professionals before deliberately seeking exposure to M. vaccae or any other environmental microorganisms).

The Mayo Clinic’s “hygiene hypothesis” suggests that exposing children to dirt and microbes during play can contribute to the development of a robust and healthy immune system (see video below). This theory proposes that early exposure to various bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms found in the soil helps the immune system learn to distinguish between harmful pathogens and harmless substances. As a result, the immune system becomes better equipped to respond effectively to real threats while reducing the risk of developing allergies and autoimmune diseases later in life.

Furthermore, studies indicate that children raised on farms, known for their abundance of bacteria, are less likely to develop asthma and allergies in comparison to those brought up in urban settings. In fact, research shows that children from rural farming environments have a significantly reduced risk, ranging from 32% to 78%, of developing asthma when compared to their counterparts from non-farming rural areas. Check out this study for more information.

By encouraging kids to play in the dirt, parents can support the natural strengthening of their child’s immune systems and promote overall health.

Mycobacterium vaccae, also known as M. vaccae, is a type of bacterium found in soil and other natural environments. M. vaccae may offer various health benefits:

  1. Immune System Stimulation: M. vaccae can stimulate the immune system, leading to increased production of cytokines. Cytokines are proteins that play a crucial role in the immune response and help regulate inflammation.
  2. Mood Enhancement: Studies have shown that M. vaccae may have positive effects on mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. It is believed that exposure to the bacterium triggers the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of well-being and happiness.
  3. Reduction of Allergies: Some research indicates that early exposure to M. vaccae and other environmental microbes may help train the immune system to respond appropriately to allergens. This exposure might reduce the risk of developing allergies and asthma later in life.
  4. Anti-Inflammatory Effects: M. vaccae has been found to possess anti-inflammatory properties. This could potentially be beneficial in managing conditions characterized by excessive inflammation, such as certain autoimmune diseases.
  5. Improved Cognitive Function: There is emerging evidence suggesting that M. vaccae may have a positive impact on cognitive function. Studies conducted on animals have shown that exposure to M. vaccae can enhance learning and memory.
  6. Wound Healing: Some studies indicate that M. vaccae may promote wound healing and tissue repair by modulating the immune response at the site of injury.

Playing, gardening, and working in the dirt offers a range of health benefits for our children and ourselves that we believe extends beyond the physical realm, which will be explored more in future posts. But from strengthening the immune system to enhancing mental well-being and fostering a connection with nature, dirt-play provides a holistic approach to health that can lead to a healthier and happier child and family!
